Not your usual year end review

January is an ideal time to reflect on and evaluate the prior year. Naturally, we begin by reviewing key financial metrics such as return on investment, year-over-year revenue changes, and gross profit margins. However, it is equally important to assess the non-financial aspects of our businesses—elements that are often taken for granted, yet can be just as important, if not more so, than the numbers.

In my case, several areas stand out:

1) Customer trust and loyalty. My customers return year after year because they trust that my team and I will deliver on our commitments. It is a source of pride to consistently meet—and hopefully exceed—their expectations.

2) Value delivered. I provide meaningful value to my customers. Without it, they would seek alternative inventory providers. Their continued partnership reinforces the relevance and impact of our work.

3) Trusted advisor role. When customers need guidance on DMS questions, industry guidelines, benchmarks, or ideas for improving their operations, I am often among the first people they call. This trust is deeply meaningful to me, not only as a business owner, but as an individual.

4) Employee engagement and commitment. Many of my employees work part-time or on an on-call basis, some only a few times a year. Yet when I reach out to see if they are available to work, the response is almost always an enthusiastic “yes.” This speaks volumes and is incredibly rewarding on both a professional and personal level.

5) Reviewing setbacks and losses. Finally, it is important to reflect on failures and lost clients from the past year. While this may seem counterintuitive, we often learn far more from our setbacks than from our successes. The key is to learn from them and improve moving forward.

In closing, as we analyze last year’s data in detail, we should not overlook the less tangible side of the business—the aspects that do not appear on spreadsheets. While many organizations can offer similar services, it is the human element that truly differentiates us and sets us apart from our competitors.
